Yes, to achieve the Tea Party’s goals, the economy must collapse, resulting in a global depression. They believe that this will lead to plagues, wars leading to nuclear conflict, the return of Jesus, and a new Heaven and a new, tea-party compatible Earth.
Talk about rational actors.

Well that’s just counter productive/stupid. I think the lawmakers are getting anxious because they don’t know where to cut and are just picking any place that could lower spending. It’le be interesting to see what more radical stupid ideas come up as August 2nd comes closer.

Loved this post! I was actually going to take on this topic but you beat me to it. I agree with you. It’s complete B.S. and although it may tug at the heartstrings of the public in the short run, in the long run it would be a disaster.

Very true. I feel like these lawmakers have never taken an introductory economics class.

Loved how you ended this with “History has shown an amendment is not required to balance the budget. Rather a budget which brings in more revenue than it spends will do so.”

I’m not afraid about our country doing poorly in the long run, but I am worried about politics messing with our economic system that has produced results over the last 100 years.

Thank you very much for writing this. I am tired of the Republicans and Tea Partiers in Congress calling actions like these ‘isolated incidents’. It might have been isolated early on, but we can now clearly see the trend. Conservative hate rhetoric is ruining political discourse in our country, and those politicians need to be held responsible. I am ashamed at Sarah Palin and her cronies, and I would hope for an apology soon. There are no words to describe how angry I am right now.

As a lapsed Catholic myself (even though I live in a predominantly LDS location), I have had the same thoughts. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a parish that I have attended regularly since I was in high school, so I less of a grounding in the religion than you, Dan, but I wish I had the nerve to do what you are planning to do.
